Product Updates - January 18, 2021 - High Performance Grid

What’s new?

:zap:  New year, new high performance grid

We’re thrilled to share that after 6 months in development, we’ve completed and released the full version of our new worksheet grid. Working in a dense sheet on a large high resolution monitor? No problem. This change brings Spreadsheet.com’s grid performance up to par with today’s leading online spreadsheets in Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

:bust_in_silhouette:  The Collaborator data type has been renamed to "User"

We’ve renamed the Collaborator data type to “User” as shown:

We’ve also added an option to only show avatars (i.e. profile images) in User cells. When enabled, User cell values are more compact:

:sparkles:  Data type selector tidiness

We’ve added a new level of organization to the data type selector shown when inserting a new column or changing the data type of a column, cell, or range of cells. Now data types are organized into categories starting with most frequently used. This should make it faster and easier to find the data type you are looking for.

:white_large_square:  Gray selection border for read-only cells

When a column or specific cell is read-only, such as column formulas and related row lookups, you will now see a gray selection border around that cell.

:hammer_and_wrench:  Worksheet toolbar changes

We’ve added the # Number data type to the worksheet toolbar and removed the rarely-used Underline button (still available via CTRL+U / Command+U, and from the Format menu).

:sparkles:  New Column and Table header row hover behavior

Following a community suggestion from @Vertex42 we changed the behavior of column headers and table header row cells so that drop-down arrows appear non-intrusively on hover.

:key:  Workbook permission level indicator

Now it’s easy to quickly find out what permission level you have in a workbook by hovering over your profile icon in the top right of your browser, or by clicking on it:

What’s next?

We’re wrapping up development on the following features and excited to roll them out to you within the next few weeks:

  • Workbook backup history: Ability to preview old versions of a workbook showing each change made, when it was made, and who made it. This also includes the ability to restore and create copies of any version. You’ll be able to see granular changes down to the individual cell level, and restore the whole workbook or copy just the cells you need from a backup to your live version, data types and all. We plan to store full backup history on all workbooks for at least 3 years.

  • View permissions and locking: Ability to mark views as Private and limit them to a specific set of users, as well as the ability to lock specific views so no other users can make changes without first unlocking.

Great update! I hope other people like the hover effect of the drop-down arrows as much as I do. The main advantage is the ability to fit more text within a label without having to widen a column. Thanks for considering the suggestion.

Kudos on the grid performance, also. That’s an important achievement.
