Hyperlinks to Windows Explorer Files

Has anyone attempted to use the hyperlink function to open a file on your computer or server? I’ve pointed the hyperlink to a file on my hard drive. When clicked, it downloads the file in Chrome or does nothing (it gets blocked). When I point to a file on my company’s server, the web browser says “can’t reach the site”.

I’m used to using links to open large files in Excel and using Excel as a file manager/ document manager. This functionality may be beyond what is possible trying to execute files from a web browser.

Browsers by security design, do not have access to local file systems including network shares. Excel is a locally installed software and enjoys higher privileges.

You can workaround this by putting the files you need on a web server like Google Drive, Dropbox, etc that are accessible by Internet/Intranet and use those links as hyperlinks.
